The ailing chairman of the CJ Group, Lee Jay-hyun, has thanked staff after being pardoned in a special amnesty by President Park Geun-hye on Liberation Day.
Lee was sprung from jail after service just over two years of a sentence for embezzlement and tax evasion.
"The last three years were extremely difficult for me both mentally and physically," Lee wrote on the group's intranet on Tuesday. "But I was able to endure the ordeal because of our company and you."
He said he plans to look after his health for the time being but pledged to return to work as soon as possible.
Lee has had multiple problems after a kidney transplant in August 2013. He also suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neurological condition characterized by progressive degeneration of the muscles in the feet, lower legs and hands.
He has spent the time since his release with his mother, who suffered a stroke late last year.
