How to Stay Healthy in Summer Heat

    Some 539 people have already fallen victim to heat-related illnesses this summer, 2.1 times as many as last year's 260, and eight people had died of heatstroke as of last week.

    The best way to beat the heat is to stay indoors at the height of the midday heat. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to refrain from going outside and take a rest in cool places between noon and 5 p.m.

    It is vital to maintain body moisture by drinking sports drinks or fruit juice and moisten face or the back of the neck with cool water regularly. Wear loose-fitting and brightly colored clothes if possible. Keep a close watch on the elderly and children whose bodies have less temperature control.

    Many people are struggling to sleep because of tropical nights, when the heart beats faster to give off your body heat. Keeping the air conditioner or the electric fan on at night not only is bad for your health but sends your electricity bill sky-high.

    Prof. Park Hee-min at Seoul Severance Hospital said, "In summer, our body needs to adapt to heat. You further increase the risk of heat-related illnesses because your body fails to adapt to heat if you go outside after being exposed to cool winds from the air conditioner or the electric fan all day."

    "To get a sound sleep, set the air conditioner or electric fan to work for about two hours before going to sleep and before waking up," he added.

    Keep the room temperature at about 26 degrees Celsius. Avoid caffeinated drinks that disturb sound sleep, and do not snack after dinner as this will keep the digestive system awake.
