Most of the top Korean universities fell in Asian university rankings again this year after a brief surge that lasted only a few years.
Only Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Seoul National University barely scraped into the Asian Top 10. Instead, top universities in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore overtook their Korean rivals.
There are worries that if the trend continues Korean universities will be pushed to the periphery of international higher learning.
In this year's ranking by the Chosun Ilbo and Quacquarelli Symonds of the U.K., KAIST came sixth, SNU 10th, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) 12th, Korea University 16th, Yonsei University 18th, and Sungkyunkwan University 19th
Six Korean universities made it into Top 20, but all except Korea University saw their rankings drop or stagnate.
SNU slid by two places from last year to 10th, scoring worse than when the tally was first conducted in 2009. It peaked in fourth place in 2014. KAIST slid by three notches and POSTECH and Sungkyunkwan by two notches each.
Korean universities are performing worse in research than their Asian rivals, and SNU also scored poorly for internationalization, including the number of exchange students. Many foreign researchers left the university in the last couple of years.
This year's rankings cover a total of 517 universities in 17 countries.
