A national ceremony to mark the 36th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising was held at a national cemetery in the city on Wednesday.
It was attended by Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and leaders of three main political parties. At the ceremony, Hwang said the uprising was a watershed in the nation's path to democracy that paved the way for a more free and just society.
The ceremony was attended by roughly 3,000 guests, including government officials and the families of those who died in the brutal crackdown
