North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister Yo-jong was elected to the Workers Party's central committee at the party congress that came to an end on Monday.
Kim Yo-jong was 42nd on a list of 129 members of the committee, which is a stepping stone to the Politburo. A government source here said Kim Yo-jong is technically already the No. 2 official in the North.
She has been in charge of propaganda as well as overseeing promotions and appointments.
She showed up on the platform alongside Kim Jong-un during a mass rally in Pyongyang held to mark the party congress on Tuesday.
It seems she was not put straight into the Politburo because she is only in her 20s.
"Kim Yo-jong's name didn't appear at the top of the list of central committee members, so the regime seems in no hurry to promote her yet," said Prof. Nam Sung-wook of Korea University.
"The regime may feel that a shadow role behind the scenes is more effective and that a young front-woman would make the regime look less serious and offend the old guard."
