Toyota released the fully modified model of its flagship Prius hybrid on Tuesday, posing new competition for Hyundai in the compact hybrid car market.

The Japanese carmaker began taking pre-orders for the vehicle, while Hyundai rolled out the Ioniq, its first fully-dedicated eco-friendly car, in January.

The new Prius has a combined fuel efficiency of 21.9 km per liter, around 1 km more than its predecessor and costs from W32.6 million to W38.9 million (US$1=W1,160).

The Ioniq is some W10 million less expensive than the Prius and more fuel efficient at 22.4 km per liter.

"Diesel models account for around 70 percent of the import car market here while hybrids make up a mere 4 percent," said Toyota Korea CEO Akihisa Yoshida. "Along with Hyundai, we'll make efforts to boost the use of eco-friendly cars."
