The chairman of food and entertainment conglomerate CJ Group has asked for another break from a 30-month jail term so he can get medical treatment. It is his ninth request.

A CJ spokesman said Lee Jay-hyun is on medication to suppress rejection of a kidney transplant, which in turn has made his Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease worse.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is an inherited neurological disease characterized by progressive degeneration of the muscles in the feet, lower legs and hands.

Lee was convicted of embezzlement and tax evasion in 2013 but his sentence was suspended later that year after his chronic kidney disease worsened.

He was incarcerated for two months in 2014 but sent to hospital when his health deteriorated rapidly.

The Seoul High Court on appeal last year sentenced Lee to two years and six months behind bars and fined him W25.2 billion (US$1=W1,210).
