Disgraced former president Chun Doo-hwan's son Jae-yong has applied to pay a W4 billion fine for tax evasion in installments since he claims he cannot afford the lump sum (US$1=W1,161).
The Seoul Central District Court said Monday Chun, who was sentenced by the Supreme Court in August to pay the fine, has to follow the court order within 30 days. But he only paid a few score million and told prosecutors he would pay the remainder in installments.
Prosecutors told him to submit a detailed schedule. Normally only people on low incomes are allowed to pay off fines in installments, but Chun claims he has no money left since he had to help pay the W220 billion fine imposed on his father for corruption in office from 1980 to 1988.
If Chun's payment plan is rejected, he could face imprisonment with labor at public works.
