Hyundai scion Chung Mong-joon officially withdrew his candidacy for the presidency of FIFA on Monday.
Writing on his blog Chung said, "Due to unjust measures by the FIFA ethics committee, I have missed the deadline to register my candidacy, which was Oct. 26. It is time for me to officially withdraw my candidacy."
But he vowed to “embark on a battle to bring about real changes to FIFA."
The FIFA ethics committee on Oct. 8 slapped Chung with a six-year ban and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs for "defaming" the governing body and failing to keep confidentiality over an investigation into irregularities during Korea's World Cup bids.
Chung filed for an injunction with a Swiss court to suspend the punishment but was rejected.
The election will take place as scheduled on Feb. 26 next year.
