A cleaning lady who found an envelope stuffed with checks worth W100 million is to get her reward after police identified the owner (US$1=W1,159).
The man, a businessman in his 50s identified by his surname Kwak, told police Wednesday that the money belongs to him and presented photocopies of the checks, which matched the serial numbers.
Kwak said he had drawn the checks to pay for remodeling at his new home. He claimed his family and a maid helped him pack, and somebody must have thrown away my suitcase that contained the checks.
He also wrote to police agreeing to pay a reward to the cleaning lady. Police plan to return the money soon.
Kwak did not say how much he is giving the cleaning lady. Under Korean law, those who find lost money, checks or property are entitled to a reward between five and 20 percent of the value of the recovered items.
