President Park Geun-hye has granted a special leave to all enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers for Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving, Cheong Wa Dae said Sunday.
About 560,000 of all 670,000 troops can visit their homes on a one-night leave.
This is the first time that a president has granted special leave to all soldiers.
Soldiers can decide when to visit home or add their special leave to their regular leave. Non-commissioned officers have to use it within a year and enlisted men any time before they finish their military service.
Cheong Wa Dae said Park wanted to reward the soldiers for their loyalty in responding to the maiming of two soldiers by box mines in the demilitarized zone and the recent exchange of fire across the border.
