The body of CJ Group honorary chairman Lee Maeng-hee arrived in Korea from China on Monday, where he died aged 84 from lung cancer.

Lee was the elder brother of ailing Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee.

A CJ spokesman said a funeral altar was set up for guests to offer their condolences over a three-day period from Tuesday.

Members of the Lee family visited the altar to pay their respects, including Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong.

CJ Group chairman Lee Jay-hyun, who is also ill, will attend his father's funeral.

The younger Lee was sentenced to four years in prison last year for embezzlement and tax evasion but is in hospital for a kidney transplant.

The elder Lee was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago. He had been designated heir of the Samsung Group in the early 1960s but fell out of favor with the founder over a chemicals smuggling scandal in 1966.

Lee Kun-hee, the third son, gained control of Samsung Group when the founder died in 1987, and Lee Maeng-hee has been living abroad since the 1980s.

The CJ Group split from Samsung in 1993.
