Kathleen Stephens, the former U.S. ambassador to Seoul, will start a new career here in September as a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

Stephens is going to lecture on diplomacy and trade, with a focus on Korean Peninsula and the international order.

"The practical knowledge, experience and know-how Stephens possesses will be a tremendous help to students looking to become experts in the field of diplomacy," said HUFS President Kim In-chul.

Stephens served as ambassador in Seoul from 2008 to 2011.

She came here for the first time with the Peace Corps in 1970 and taught English at a middle school in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province.

When she was named as ambassador to Seoul, she made the headlines as the first U.S. ambassador who could speak Korean and the first woman ambassador here.

Following her stint in Seoul, Stephens was ambassador to India from May to December last year and a special fellow at the Asia-Pacific Research Center of Stanford University.
