Hundreds more schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province have decided to close amid mounting fears of the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education chief Cho Hee-yeon on Sunday ordered the temporary closure all 126 kindergartens and elementary and middle schools in Gangnam and Seocho districts, near infection hub Samsung Medical Center.

They will stay closed until Wednesday.

"We'll consider ordering more schools to close if principals in other districts ask for it and there's an increase in the number of infected patients requiring isolation," a spokesman for the office said.

Gyeonggi Province also decided to close 1,225 kindergartens and primary and secondary schools in Anseong, Bucheon, Hwaseong, Osan, Pyeongtaek, Suwon and Yongin until Friday.

The most infections occurred at St. Mary's Hospital in Pyeongtaek.

As of Monday over 1,800 schools had been ordered closed nationwide.
