An English teacher from South Africa has been fired for forcing children to drink dishwashing liquid as punishment for speaking Korean in class.
The incident happened at a private elementary school in Seoul last week, when the 32-year-old forced five of her students to choose their form of punishment for breaking the rules.
The choices were to drink nail biting solution or dishwashing liquid. Three chose detergent and two the bitter solution.
When parents found out about the unusual punishment they protested to the school.
The teacher claimed that the students had to drink only a small amount of the fluids, but the parents were still outraged.
The school replaced the teacher the following day but did not report the incident to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
An official at the education office said, "The school is not required to report an incident if a student has not been seriously injured or was subject to bullying, but we're looking at the incident."
The school also posted an apology on its website.
