Some 2.66 billion individual trips were made on the Seoul subway last year, up 41.4 million compared to 2013 and around 7.2 million trips a day.
That means an estimated 70 percent of Seoul's 10.4 million citizens used the subway daily.
Line No. 2 had the most users.
The Chosun Ilbo analyzed figures tallied by Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit and Metro 9.
The busiest of the 302 subway stations was Gangnam Station, which saw 135,642 users a day. It has been the busiest station in the capital for 18 years.
Gangnam Station director Choi Young-bae said Samsung headquarters and many crammers and a couple of movie theaters are near the station, which explains the busy traffic. Between 9 and 11 p.m., around 10,000 people use the station every hour.
The second-busiest stop was Hongik University Station, where 107,000 people got on or off a day. The station is surrounded by a bustling commercial district and has seen a surge in Chinese tourists since last year.
Also increasing every year is the number of free users like senior citizens and the handicapped. A total of 249 million free trips were made last year, which translates into W288.1 billion (US$1=W1,099) in unpaid fares.
