Almost a quarter of married men have been unfaithful, a survey by the Korean Women's Development Institute on Sunday suggests.

Among male respondents, 36.9 percent said they had sexual relations with someone else while being married. Among women only 6.5 percent said they had an affair.

Twenty percent of the men said they had sexual relations with a married woman before getting married but only 11.4 percent of the women gave the same answer.

"This shows that marital infidelity is not uncommon in this society," the institute said.

A spokeswoman said women tend to have affairs with married men while they were single while men tend to be unfaithful while they are married.

Some 60.4 percent of the respondents believe the law banning adultery is necessary, while 21.2 percent feel it should be abolished eventually but it is realistically too early. The remaining 18.5 percent said it should be scrapped.

However, 63.4 percent said the mandated prison term is inappropriate. By gender, 68.8 percent of men and 57.7 percent of women were against a prison sentence.
