North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected the construction site of a prestige housing complex for scientists in Pyongyang from his private plane.

The plane is an Antonov An-148 the North bought recently from the Ukrainian company.

North Korean media published various images of high-rise buildings and apartment complexes under construction along the Taedong River.

"It is very good to see buildings under construction as planned," Kim was reported as saying.

His father Kim Jong-il had a morbid fear of flying and traveled everywhere by armored train.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un looks down from his private plane at downtown Pyongyang in these photos released by the Rodong Sinmun on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the North's nominal No. 2 man Kim Yong-nam, the president of the Supreme People's Assembly Presidium, did not show up at a rally in Pyongyang on Sunday to mark Kim Jong-il's birthday.

It was the first time he has failed to attend such an event.

Kim Yong-nam is 87 this year, fueling speculation that his duties are getting too much for him.
