N.Korean Army Steps Up Winter Drills

The North Korean army is conducting intensive winter drills, stepping up parachute jump exercises and using AN-2 aircraft for low-altitude flights for infiltration drills.

A military source here on Wednesday said, "We're keeping close watch on the North Korean military, because it's been conducting unusually intensive winter drills a month earlier than usual."

The North used to start the drills in early December.

This year more than 10,000 special troops have taken part in parachute jump drills, the source added.

The intensity of the drills is at the highest level in 10 years. Besides, more than twice as many artillery pieces as before are participating in fire drills.

"It seems likely that the North Korean military could carry out provocations, including artillery fire in the frontline area or missile launches, if things do not turn out in its favor in human rights, economic and inter-Korean issues," the source warned.
