Authorities are stepping up efforts to contain the potential spread of the deadly Ebola virus as the nation prepares to host several international conferences that are set to gather around 150 participants from West Africa.
Saenuri Party lawmaker Moon Jong-lim said during a National Assembly audit of the Health and Welfare Ministry on Monday that Korea is set to host four international conferences this month alone whose participants include around 150 representatives from West African countries.
From Oct. 20 until Nov. 7, Busan will host the biggest gathering of members of the Geneva-based International Telecommunication Union, which has invited 18 representatives from Guinea, nine from Sierra Leone, six from Liberia and 91 from Nigeria.
Kim Young-taek at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said "Most of the participants are government workers so there is very little chance that they came into actual contact with Ebola patients in Africa, but we plan to keep a close eye on them."
