North and South Korea traded small arms fire Friday after Pyongyang shot at a propaganda-filled balloon sent by South Korean activists.

Seoul defense officials say they returned fire across the border after some of the North Korean shots landed on South Korean territory.

The target of the South's machine gun fire was not immediately clear. It is also not clear whether the leaflet-stuffed balloons were brought down.

No casualties were reported on either side.

A group of Seoul-based activists, made up mostly of defectors from the North, sent anti-Pyongyang leaflets to the North on Friday, the 69th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers Party.

Pyongyang had warned of an "uncontrollable catastrophe" in inter-Korean relations unless the South Korean government stopped the launch.

North Korea has complained about similar leaflet drops in the past, including one last month. But the government in Seoul has not taken action so far to stop the activists.

Some information for this report comes from AP and AFP.
