North Korea has denounced a Hollywood comedy about an attempted assassination of leader Kim Jong-un an "act of war" and pledged to "retaliate."

Columbia Pictures recently released a trailer for "The Interview," a caper starring Seth Rogen.

The trailer for the film "insulting the dignity of the supreme leadership" is now circulating "in the U.S., the mastermind and hotbed of international terrorism," a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

He added distribution of the film would be treated as "the most outright act of terrorism and an act of war."

"Our military and our people regard the supreme leader as more precious than their own lives," the spokesman added. "If the U.S. administration connives at and patronizes the screening of the film, it invites strong and merciless countermeasures."

The film is slated for release in the U.S. in October.
