Samsung SDI said Wednesday it will jointly develop next-generation lithium-ion batteries with Ford.
The battery aims to replace conventional lead-acid batteries for gasoline or diesel-powered automobiles.
Lithium-ion batteries are 40 percent lighter, aiding fuel efficiency.
The two companies also agreed to develop a dual-battery system that combines traditional lead-acid with lithium-ion batteries. Ted Miller, head of battery research at Ford, said it will drastically reduce fuel consumption.
