Seoul is to host a UN field office to address human rights violations in North Korea.
"The UN has called for a field office in Asia to monitor human rights abuses in North Korea, and South Korea has been considered as a host country at the request of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights," a government source said Wednesday. "We'll discuss further details."
In February, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea published a report accusing the North of human rights violations and calling for measures to bring the North Korean leadership to justice.
The following month the report was submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, which adopted a resolution calling for an office under the UNHRC to monitor and record the human rights situation in the North.
The field office is expected to open in Seoul later this year.
