Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province hosted a candlelight vigil at a local park on Saturday for victims of the ferry disaster off the southwest coast and prayed for the safe return of those still listed as missing. Many of the passengers aboard the doomed ferry were students from the school on a group trip.

The event was scheduled to start at 8 p.m. but many mourners arrived earlier than expected. It followed a similar event held on Friday at the school for students and parents.

Further south in Busan, Buddhist monks held a candlelight vigil ahead of the opening of the Lotus Lantern Festival. Most of the other seasonal festivals due to take place this month or next have been canceled or postponed out of respect for the victims of the sunken vessel.
