UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on Friday said Tokyo must "take legal responsibility" for women who were forced to serve as sex slaves for Japanese troops during World War II, Kyodo News reported.
Mlambo-Ngcuka told reporters in Tokyo that "legal steps" must be taken to compensate the women whose rights were abused. As one solution, she cited a formal apology from Tokyo and legal steps to compensate the victims.
Mlambo-Ngcuka, a UN under-secretary-general, was South Africa's vice present from 2005 to 2008. She was appointed executive director of UN Women last year succeeding Michelle Bachelet, who is now president of Chile.
