New York State lawmakers and Korean-American community groups have joined hands to push for legislation that would require school textbooks to call the body of water between Korea and Japan "East Sea" as well as "Sea of Japan."
State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky and Assembly member Edward Braunstein proposed a bill that would require all textbooks used in the state’s public schools to use both names.
The lawmakers gave a press conference with Korean-American community groups where they pledged to make sure the bill passes by May.
The bill, if passed, will apply to textbooks published in the state from July 1.
The move follows a similar bill in the U.S. state of Virginia.
