Ahn Cheol-soo on Thursday announced he is setting up a new political party ready for launch next year.

The independent lawmaker in a press conference at the National Assembly said, "I reached the conclusion that a worn cast can no longer hold anything, and there is no choice now but for a new political force to step forward."

Ahn, who is popular among younger voters, had been aggressively wooed by the Democratic Party but apparently decided his agenda of breaking with traditional politics would be weakened by joining the established main opposition party.

He vowed to create a party composed of people with a "wide range of ideas" to achieve greater public unity.

Ahn took pot shots at both the ruling Saenuri and main opposition Democratic parties and accused them of being stuck in factionalism and ignoring the needs of the public.

"We should respect all forces in society; we are not enemies against one another," Ahn said. "We will work hard to answer the desperate public demand for politics that takes account of them."

Ahn did not give a timetable for the launch of his party, but said he would do his best to take part in next June's local elections "responsibly."

Ahn withdrew from the last presidential election at the last minute despite a lead in some opinion polls, leaving the field to the two establishment candidates.
