Gov't to Preserve Records of Former Sex Slaves

The government will preserve records of former sex slaves in the National Archives of Korea. The archives on Monday said it will keep 3,060 records related to women who were forced to serve as sex slaves for Japanese troops during World War II.

The documents are currently held by a charity in Gwangju that shelters the women, who are now in their 80s.

The records will be stored in digital format and be accessible to the public.

An NAK official said the former sex slaves have no children and are growing older, while many have already died, and their memories risk being "lost forever."

Only 56 of the women survive.
