South Korea, the U.S. and Japan launched a two-day joint military drill on Thursday in Korea's South Sea.

During the exercise which was delayed for a few days due to typhoon Danas, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington was mobilized with 70 state-of-the-art aircraft on board, including anti-submarine helicopters and Super Hornet fighter jets.

Aegis destroyers from South Korea and Japan will also participate in search-and-rescue operations and other maritime maneuvers.

The training took place despite North Korea's threats of "disastrous consequences" earlier this week.
