About 18 percent of pupils in Korean schools could be addicted to smartphones to the point where it disrupts their lives, a survey suggests.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family conducted a survey of 1.7 million schoolkids nationwide in May and June and found that of the 1.3 million who use smartphones, 240,000 or 18 percent are addicted.
Addicted youngsters show anxiety if they are unable to use their phones all the time. The older the students, the more serious the addiction.
Choi Yo-han of the Korea Youth Counseling and Welfare Institute said, "Parents should delay buying smartphones for their children as long as possible, and if they do, they should subscribe to a cheaper plan which limits usage."
Apps that allow parents to monitor their children's usage and browsing history are also helpful, he added.
