The resort island of Jeju celebrated breaking its monthly tourism record with more than 1 million visitors in April. Of that number, approximately 800,000 were domestic travelers and the rest came from overseas. This represented a 40 percent jump in international tourists from the same month last year. Local officials attribute the growth to broader marketing aimed at raising awareness of its UNESCO World Heritage sites and breath-taking scenery.
Domestic air travel to the popular tourism spot has also picked up 13 percent, while numerous new international routes were added over the last year. The rapid growth in the cruise ship industry has also played a major role in attracting tourists with over 5 million disembarking in 2012, representing nearly a 450 percent jump on-year.
The peak tourism season will continue for the next two months. Jeju hopes to record more than 12.5 million tourists in total this year.
