Cha Du-ri of FC Seoul has filed for divorce after five years of marriage, it emerged on Wednesday. The footballer asked for divorce by mutual agreement with wife Shin Hye-seong at the Seoul Family Court on March 12.
Cha is the eldest son of Korean football legend Cha Bum-kun. He married Shin, the eldest daughter of Shin Chul-ho, founder and chief executive of Imperial Palace Hotel, in December 2008, and has one son and one daughter.
Cha started his professional career in Germany's Bundesliga in 2002 and played in overseas leagues for 10 years, including in Scotland.
Shin reportedly struggled to adjust to long years abroad and wanted to return to Korea when Cha started playing for the Celtic in Scotland. She returned to Korea with the children when Cha decided to move from the Celtic to Dusseldorf in Germany last June.
Cha returned home in February after terminating his contract with the German team, originally set to run until June 2014, and joined FC Seoul on March 25.
