Over 100 artists from 40 countries will portray their work at this year's Gwangju Biennale, which is divided into six sub-sections with distinct themes, such as nature, space, peace and history. It opens on Friday and runs until Nov. 11.
Many of the works incorporate social, political or cultural elements, and some use real military firearms to deliver a warning about unnecessary violence. A number of artists are showcasing performance art.
There will be special performances and events for visitors on weekends and during Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving, at the end of the month.
