Dokdo to Become National 'Geopark'

The government has decided to make Dokdo the country's first national geological park by the end of the year, to give due weight to the islets' unique volcanic nature and dramatic landscape.

An Environment Ministry official on Wednesday said North Gyeongsang Province, which administers the islets, will submit an application to designate Ulleung, Dokdo and the surrounding sea waters as a geological park by next month. "As soon as we get the application, we will review and approve it," the official added.

The so-called geopark will be managed by the government in order to preserve natural sites and use them for educational and tourism projects.

The regulations on natural parks revised in February have new provisions related to naming geoparks in addition to national, municipal and provincial parks.
