The Ministry of Employment and Labor will be rolling out new employment guidelines on Aug. 2 designed to ease the burden of working parents.
With the new rules, employees who have children under four years of age can apply for shorter working hours instead of taking full maternity leave. Instead of taking complete weeks or months off, they can choose to work a few hours a day, either in the morning or afternoon. If they work for 15-30 hours per week, employers must let them pick a more flexible schedule, except in very special circumstances.
The new regulations also expand family care leave. Employees will be able to request an extended leave of up to 90 days per year to take care of sick family members or those injured in accidents.
The ministry has promised to ensure that employees are not penalized in promotions or retirement benefits if they choose to take advantage of the new regulations.
