South Korea has moved up eight spots to rank 42nd in a London think-tank's annual index that gauges how peaceful and harmonious countries are.

The Institute for Economics and Peace released its Global Peace Index of 158 countries on Thursday. The countries are ranked in seven categories such as international conflict, military expansion, war-time casualties, degree of crime, public security and public order.

Iceland topped the list followed by Denmark, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. Somalia took last place as the least peaceful country, and was directly preceded by Afghanistan, Sudan and Iraq.

North Korea was ranked 152nd, one place ahead of Russia.
