Suwon Suspect a Serial Killer?

      April 10, 2012 09:45

The suspect in the grisly murder of a young woman in Suwon south of Seoul had apparently planned his crime in advance rather than acting in a fit of rage.

Wu Yuanchun (42), an ethnic Korean from China, told police he killed the woman after bumping into her and getting in an argument, but CCTV footage shows Wu apparently pushing the woman on purpose. The new piece of evidence casts doubt on Wu's confession and has raised suspicions that he committed other murders.

Footage from surveillance cameras around 50 m from the scene of the crime shows Wu hiding behind a telephone pole in front of his house before walking up to the victim and knocking her down. The grainy footage was taken at 10:32 p.m. on April 1 and lasts for 13 seconds.

Police analyzed footage from seven CCTV cameras in that area when they searched for the woman but stopped once Wu was arrested on the morning of April 2. Police have come under fire for their slow response to a desperate call the woman was able to make on her cell phone while being held in Wu's home six hours before he killed her. Now it appears they also fumbled other parts of the investigation.

A police spokesman said the investigation would now focus on whether Wu committed other crimes.
