The number of elementary schoolchildren in Seoul has dropped to about half of what it was 19 years ago and the lowest since 1965. There are now 535,000 children in Seoul's elementary classrooms.

The average teacher-student ratio for elementary schools in the capital has dropped to one teacher for every 18 children, one third of what it was 30 years ago. Analysts blame Korea's record low birthrate and the growing number of singles.

Both women and men are increasingly putting off marriage until after their late 30s in order to pursue their careers and education.
