UNESCO designated 2013 the "Year of Donguibogam" to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the Korean medical encyclopedia, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said Monday.

Since 2004, UNESCO has designated every second year to commemorate persons or themes related to the UN cultural organization's ideals. This is the first time that a Korean book or person has been chosen.

"Donguibogam" was published by royal physician Heo Jun (1539-1615) in 1613 under the auspices of King Seonjo. It is the culmination of traditional Korean medicine and Oriental medical science.

The book was included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme in July 2009 for its contribution to the development of the world medical culture.
