President Lee Myung-bak and first lady Kim Yoon-ok take off for Washington on Tuesday for a visit expected to focus on strengthening the bilateral relationship as well as economic ties.

During his four-day trip, Lee will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama and address a joint session of Congress. There, he will talk about the Korea-U.S. FTA and how the deal will help both countries. On Friday, Lee heads to Detroit, the devastated heart of the American auto industry, with his U.S. counterpart.

Observers believe the visit is related to the FTA, which has met with opposition from U.S. automakers. Lee then stops in Chicago for meetings with business leaders and Korean residents there before returning home on Sunday.
