U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens became an honorary citizen of Jeju Province with a certificate from Jeju Governor Woo Keun-min at her residence recently.

Stephens first visited Jeju as a member of the Peace Corps in the 1970s. "I liked it so much that before I left Korea for good in 1977, I went back to Jeju-do for ten days of reflection and relaxation before returning to the United States, where I was headed for Washington and what I hoped would be the start of my diplomatic career," she wrote on her blog.

Last year, she participated in the walking tour program "Jeju Olle," before attending a Northeast Asia Security Conference and the dedication ceremony of a Pacific Rim Park on the island. She also had the opportunity to dive with the island's famous haenyo or female divers this year.
