Wrong Textbook Information About Dokdo to Be Corrected

      May 06, 2011 12:02

The government has promised to correct inaccurate geographical information about the Dokdo islets that have been discovered in middle and high school textbooks.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said on Thursday that two middle school texts and seven high school texts will be revised next year. Activist groups discovered the errors and raised the issue last month.

Five of them use unofficial names such as "Daehanbong," "Ilchulbong," or "Cheotseom" in geographical references to Dokdo or outdated names. They are not part of 22 standard designations for Dokdo and various locales on the islets that a government committee authorized in 2006.

Two textbooks contain inaccurate coordinates, while two other texts have incorrect figures for the total area of the islets. The official longitudinal coordinate of Dokdo is 131°52' east.
