The Cannes Film Festival has invited three Korean films to its Un Certain Regard section, but none for the official competition where the prestigious Palme d'Or is awarded.

According to the festival's website, Hong Sang-soo's "The Day He Arrives," Kim Ki-duk's "Arirang" and Na Hong-jin's "Yellow Sea" were selected to screen in Un Certain Regard.

"Ya-Gan-Bi-Hang (Fly by Night)" by Son Tae-gyun was invited to the students' Cinefondation selection.

Among the films invited to the official competition are Pedro Almodovar's "La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I Live In)," Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," and Lars von Trier's "Melancholia."

Two Japanese films will also vie for the Palme d'Or -- Naomi Kawase's "Hanezu No Tsuki" and "Ichimei (Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai)" by Takashi Miike.
