Japanese PM Sorry for Silence Over Radioactive Dumping

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Sunday expressed regret about his failure to warn neighboring countries of his government's decision to release radioactive water into the ocean. Visiting victims of the huge earthquake and tsunami that hit nearly a month ago, Kan said Japan "should have given firmer explanations."

Earlier, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano also acknowledged Japan's failure to warn its neighbors following strong protests from other governments.

The Japanese government has now decided to keep Seoul up to date on the latest developments and convene a meeting of nuclear experts between the two nations as early as this week.

The Korean government initially offered to send its own nuclear experts to the Fukushima plant, but Tokyo rejected the offer and instead proposed a meeting of nuclear experts to exchange information. It has been regularly exchanging information with U.S. nuclear experts for some time.
