Beef may lose its crown as the most popular gift for the Lunar New Year holidays this year as shoppers turn to seafood products amid concerns over the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
According to Shinsegae Department Store on Thursday, a week before Lunar New Year's Day, yellow corbinas are the No. 1 gift so far, dethroning Korean-bred beef for the first time.
Lotte Department Store also said that seafood products were the bestsellers as of Thursday, accounting for 20.8 percent of gift sales, up 90.4 percent from last year when they took third place. In comparison, fresh meat items dropped from first to third with a mere 22.7 percent sales increase.
