The government on Monday banned firms operating in the joint-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex from sending staff there for the day.

"For safety reasons we've stopped firms sending their staff to the industrial park on Monday considering the escalating tensions between the two Koreas," a Unification Ministry official said.

Some 614 staff were supposed to travel to the North on Monday. At 8 a.m. on Monday, a total of 311 were staying in the North, 297 who work in Kaesong and 14 in the Mt. Kumgang tourist resort. Those who were to come back to the South on Monday are returning as scheduled.

After the North Korean artillery attack on Nov. 23, the ministry also banned all visits to Kaesong for the following two days.
