Korea finished in first place with four gold medals in the 15th International Astronomy Olympiad held in Sudak, Crimea, Ukraine over the weekend, according to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.

The academic competition for middle and high school students features two age sections -- juniors aged 15 or under and seniors aged 16 to 17. A total of 84 students from 19 countries competed in this year's event.

All seven students on the Korean squad won either gold or silver, beating by a comfortable margin runner-up Russia, which took home two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

It was the third win for Korea, which has participated in the Olympiad since 2003.
