Asiana Airlines posted its highest-ever sales and operating profit in the third quarter, following a record-setting second quarter.
Korea's second largest airline said Monday that sales soared 34.1 percent compared to last year to W1.37 trillion (US$1=W1,120). Operating profit reached W239 billion, turning around from a loss of W29 billion a year earlier.
Compared to the second quarter, sales and operating profit rose by 11 percent and 34.7 percent, respectively.
"Our third-quarter sales were boosted by an increase in Korean passengers for short trips to China and Japan, eased visa regulations for Chinese tourists, and more overseas trips due to Korea's entry into the visa waiver program of the U.S.," an Asiana spokesman said.
Demand for cargo service also increased. "The third quarter is typically slow but cargo traffic increased 12 percent on-year due to increased exports of IT products such as semiconductors and displays," the carrier said.
