The actual number of female victims of sexual violence is far greater than the official record, according to a recent report.
The study by the Korean Institute of Criminology revealed that about 470 out of every 100,000 women were sexually abused in 2008, which is eight times more than the official figure of 58 as few victims reported the crime.
A KIC researcher said the country's negative view of sex crimes causes victims to feel ashamed to step forward, and called for a new system to encourage them to speak out.
